Do not believe in anything simply because you’ve heard it.

Do not believe in traditions simply because they’ve been handed down for generations.
Do not believe in anything simply because it’s spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers or elders.

But after observation and analysis, if you find that something agrees with reason and is conducive to the benefit of one and all, you can accept and live up to it.

 Buddha

Do not believe in anything simply because an external authority pronounces it. It won’t be your truth until proven that it works for you. What is your truth?

Each of us is unique. Even when two people suffer the same kind of cancer, what led one to develop the disease might be very different from what led the other to develop it. This is why it’s so important to look at each person, not just as a photo of a moment (e.g. forty-one-year-old female with breast cancer), but to discover the film of her history and explore what led to this imbalance in her life.

Our life today is, in part, the result of decisions we made yesterday. In the same way, today’s decisions shape our future. The physician’s role is to help us identify possible stress factors that might have knocked us off balance and to help us reconnect with the neglected parts of ourselves, to find the thread that will lead us back to health.

Even today, in the twenty-first century after so many years of cancer spreading throughout the populace nearly unchecked, we continue to cling to old hypotheses about cancer, causing millions of people to suffer and convincing them not to open up to new treatment possibilities. Conventional Western medicine looks almost exclusively at the physical body. Other medical approaches, such as Chinese, Ayurvedic, Vibrational, Energy, and Quantum medicine, consider a person’s full range of body, mind, and spirit. Integrative Medicine today includes the best of conventional medicine along with the wisdom of other modalities together with recent advances in quantum medicine, neuroscience, and psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrinology.

When we face cancer, the fear that can force us to face death can also prompt us to niveles del yo copyembark on new dimensions of inquiry. Cancer not only engenders fear, but also can awaken us to a journey of integration, rediscovering ourselves as a living, emotional, social, and spiritual being, and redirecting us back to health.

I wrote this book for those who want a broader approach, who wish to take the reins of their recovery process and do something more than (just) chemo. It is an invitation to use one’s own cancer or that of a loved one as an opening to the possibility of a fuller life, of bringing more life to each new day. The stories in this book are true. They are offered as examples to transmit these basic principles. All the names and specific information have been modified to preserve confidentiality.

Depending on the stage of cancer you or your loved one is undergoing, you may want to read this book in different ways, even skipping some chapters to return to them later.

As this book was conceived from the point of view of the integrative medicine, the tools described are based on scientific evidence, research studies, or medical explanations.

Each chapter includes breakout boxes titled “Practice for Healthy Living,” intended to help you incorporate (literally, introduce into the body) the information in a practical and intuitive (and less logical) way. You’ll also find text boxes with conceptual information, and other boxes that propose a space for reflection to encourage opening to new possibilities. The appendices at the end of the book answer frequently asked questions. Because a food revolution is underway, I’ve devoted an appendix to nutrition as well. This book provides insights valid at the time of publication in 2018, but knowledge is a living entity. Not only do new advances in science appear every day, we’re also updating our understanding of who we are. Look for updates at this website. I also welcome your comments and questions via email.

I hope you will find in this book answers to your questions and doubts, and an invitation to understand the health/disease process as part of a journey you can take to increased selfknowledge and growth, recognizing that you are the principal actor of your treatment and recovery.
